MWPHA ESTABLISHES NEW, LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

By Mary McCall

This fall, the MWPHA Governing Council voted to support the Scholarship Committee's March, 2002 recommendation to establish the Charles Hayman Memorial Scholarship Fund. Dr. Hayman was a founding member of MWPHA, who left a bequest to the Association. In recognition of his many years of service in public health, MWPHA will designate up to $500 of interest from the bequest to this new scholarship fund each year.

In view of the need to develop to promote educational opportunities for public health workers in the metropolitan Washington area, MWPHA will award the Charles Hayman Memorial Scholarship annually to a current or aspiring public health worker who is seeking additional training. The fund will also accept tax?exempt contributions from MWPHA governing council members, MWPHA members, and others throughout the metropolitan Washington area who wish to support local public health education.

MWPHA anticipates that, as this scholarship fund grows, it will enhance this organization's local recognition, bolstering membership recruitment and retention efforts. If additional contributions to the fund are adequate to support multiple scholarship grants, MWPHA would like to expand this program in the future.

The scholarship may be used to pay for training such as distance learning, summer institutes, or other structured programs, in addition to degree programs. MWPHA will target local and state health departments in the metropolitan Washington area to promote awareness of the fund. The organization will also seek matching funds to expand the fund.

The application deadline for this year is March 8th, 2003, Eligibility criteria, application procedures, and an application form for the scholarship will soon be posted on the MWPHA Web site after February 1, 2003 at: http://www.mwpha.org
